Getting Started
1. Who can use the Sandbox?
If you are a current SIO student, staff, or faculty in any school or program then yes. Everyone is welcome; no experience necessary. We are an active shop, so please wear closed toed/heeled shoes and long pants.
2. How do I set up an account?
You can create an account with us during your first visit by bringing your school-issued ID card and checking in at our welcome desk. Once your account is set up, you will only need to scan in on each subsequent visit.
3. What do I need to bring with me?
To get started, bring your school-issued ID card for check-in, as well as a device to sign our online waiver. For your safety, please wear closed-toed/heeled shoes and full-length shirts/pants whenever you are in the makerspace.
4. What training do I need before using equipment?
Each piece of equipment at the makerspace has different training requirements ranging from short 10-minute overviews to learn how to use machines like the 3D printers to multi-hour sessions to learn more complex machines like our CNC. The best first step is to explain your goal to a staff member and we'll try to get you started down the right path. Please note: Training is required for all equipment before use. You can schedule a training session or drop in during open hours to complete the necessary training.
5.Do I Need to Reserve Equipment?
In general, equipment cannot be reserved. We prioritize walk-ins, but if you contact us in advance, we can provide you with an idea of how busy it might be at different times throughout the week.
6. How can I get involved, if I do not have a project in mind?
If you're unsure where to start, consider signing up for one of our workshops. We offer student-led workshops throughout the quarter that cover a variety of skills and hands-on making experience. Our Instagram is where you'll find the most up-to-date information on workshops.
7. Review Our Safety and Community Guidelines
We prioritize not only physical safety but also maintaining a respectful and inclusive space. Make sure to review our Safety and Community Guidelines before using the makerspace.
